International Admissions Requirements

Admission requirements are unique to various countries and International Curriculums. The COVID-19 Crisis has resulted in some temporary adjustments to document requirements for various curriculums for the September 2020 intake. Please review all requirements carefully to ensure timely admission to Algoma University.

Your admission will be based on your current secondary school curriculum. Please visit our Admission Requirements page and select your secondary school applicant type to ensure you will be meeting our admission requirements.

AP Transfer Credit Eligibility

Applicants who have completed AP exams with a minimum final grade of 4 will be eligible to receive university credit recognition for up to a maximum of 12 credits (or two full courses). Your results must be sent directly from the College Board in order to be considered for credit.

AP Scholarship Eligibility

Scholarship consideration will be based on the grades achieved on the current secondary school curriculum. No additional awards are offered for the completion of AP courses. Please visit the International Scholarship Page for further information.

Required Documents

  • CSEC Examination Results
  • CAPE Examination Results (Units 1 & 2)*

Admission Requirements

  • Successful completion of CSEC exams and CAPE exams
    • CSEC – Minimum Grades of 3
    • CAPE – Minimum Grades of 3 – 6 Units altogether, including at least two Unit-2.

Transfer Credit

  • Students who complete Unit-2 courses with a grade of 2 or higher are eligible for transfer credit.
  • A maximum of 12 transfer credits (4 courses) can be awarded.
  • Transfer credits can only be reviewed and awarded upon the receipt of official, sealed transcripts mailed directly from the CXC.

The university is currently reviewing it’s CXC admissions policy to determine what accommodations can be made for CXC students.

Applicants seeking admission on the basis of the General Certificate of Education (GCE) must submit two academic Advanced Level subjects with grades no lower than D.  Applicants presenting Advanced Subsidiary Level courses must submit four academic subjects with grades no lower than D.

Advanced Standing*

Algoma University offers advanced standing of 6 credits (2 courses) for each A-Level Course completed with a grade of C or higher. Transfer credits will be awarded to a maximum of 30 credits (one year).

*Students must present the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level. Algoma U does not currently offer advanced standing for the completion of AS-Level courses.

International Entrance Scholarship Requirements

Applicants must provide the university with their official IGCSE (O Level), Advanced Subsidiary and/or Advanced Level results to be awarded an unconditional International Entrance Scholarship.

English Language Requirement Waiver

Applicants must present a minimum of C in IGCSE (O Level) English, in addition to meeting the Advanced Subsidiary or Advanced Level requirements, to receive a waiver for the English Language Requirements.

COVID-19 Temporary Requirements

  • Applicants must provide O-Level, AS-Level, and Predicted A2 results

or

  • O-Level, Semester Reports from the last 2 years, and Predicted A2 results.

In all cases, predicted grades must be a minimum of C for admission and O-Level English must be a minimum grade of C to waive any English requirements.

All documents should be emailed by your guidance counselor to intl-admissions@algomau.ca, with your full legal name included in the subject line. If final results are awarded or received at a later date, it is the applicant’s responsibility to submit copies of these results as soon as possible.

Please note, advanced standing will not be awarded based on predicted results.

  • Successful completion of the IB Diploma with a minimum of 26 points is accepted for admission.
  • Candidates with 28 points or higher qualify for International Entrance Scholarship consideration. 
  • Upon attainment of 28 points, a minimum grade of 5 in either Standard (SL) or Higher (HL) Level courses is required for consideration of credit transfer.  Transfer credits may be given to a maximum of 30 credits, which is equivalent to year one of full-time study. Credits will be assessed on an individual basis.

Applicants must provide Predicted Grades, Final Grade 11 results, any available Gr. 12 Semester Reports, and their IB Diploma.

Please note, advanced standing will not be awarded based on predicted results.

To be considered for admission on the basis of the U.S. high school graduation diploma, applicants must submit an official transcript showing successful completion of five Grade 12 academic courses, including English, with an overall minimum average of 70% (B).

For specific program requirements, refer to the list below.

  • Bachelor of Arts, Music – Min. 70% average and an audition
  • Bachelor of Arts, Psychology – Min. 75% average
  • Bachelor of Business Administration – Min. 75% average, with a Gr. 12 Mathematics
  • Bachelor of Computer Science – Min. 70% average with a Gr. 12 Mathematics
  • Bachelor of Science, Computer Science – Min. 70% average with a Gr. 12 Mathematics, and two sciences (Biology, Chemistry or Physics)
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Arts – Min. 70% average and a portfolio
  • Bachelor of Science, Biology – Min. 75% average, with a Gr. 12 Mathematics, Biology, and Chemistry
  • Bachelor of Science, Psychology – Min. 75% average, with a Gr. 12 Mathematics, Biology, and Chemistry
  • Bachelor of Science, Environmental Science – Min. 70% with a Gr. 12 Mathematics, Biology, and Chemistry
  • Bachelor of Social Work – Min. 75% average

Applicants with U.S. citizenship completing the high school diploma will not be eligible for scholarship consideration. They will, however, be eligible to pay Canadian domestic fees. Please refer to the Fees and Financing section on the website for further information.

COVID-19 Temporary Requirements

Applicants must provide Grade 11 final grades, and all available midterm results from Grade 12, second semester. We also request that you submit any final results and a final high school diploma, if it is available to you.

Please note, advanced standing for AP courses will not be awarded based on predicted results.

Credential Required: Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC)

Additional Documents Required: Secondary School Certificate (SSC)

Language Requirement: Proof of English Language Proficiency is required. 

Awards:

  • No $5,000 award recommended because the marks are not on a 100% scale.
  • 5.0 (A) $2,500
  • 4.5 (B+) $1,000
  • 4.0 (B) $500

COVID-19 Temporary Requirements

The university is currently reviewing it’s admissions policy to determine what accommodations can be made for Bangladeshi students in the National Curriculum.

Documents Required:

  • Certificate of Study (Mandarin Version & Translation)
  • Student Score Report: Gr. 10 – 12
  • Notarial Certificate (Original & Translation)

It is important to note that the National Exam is not a requirement for admission.

Minimum Admissions Requirements: Minimum 5 subjects (including required courses), with all grades C5 or higher (one C6 is acceptable, as long as it’s not a required course)

Awards:

  • A1: 95% (A+) $5,000
  • B2: 85% (A $2,500
  • B3: 80% (B+) $1,000
  • C4: 75% (B) $500

Language Requirement: Proof of English Language Proficiency is required.

Applicants must provide Class X Board Results or equivalent, Class XII Semester Results or equivalent, and Class XII Predicted Grades or equivalent.

Credential Required: Sekolah Menengah Atas

Language Requirement: Proof of English Language Proficiency is required

Credential Required: KCSE (Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education)

  • 81-90 (A) $2,500
  • 71-80 (B+) $1,000
  • 61-70 (B) $500

COVID-19 Temporary Requirements

The university is currently reviewing it’s admissions policy to determine what accommodations can be made for Ghanaian students who are unable to write WASSCE.

Credential Required: See General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level OR French Baccalaureate.

Language Requirement: Proof of English Language Proficiency is required for students presenting the French Baccalaureate.

Credential Required: School Leaving Certificate Examination (Years 11 & 12)

Additional Documents: School Leaving Certificate Examination (Year 10)

Language Requirement: English Language Proficiency Test Required

Entrance Scholarships GPA Scale**:

  • 3.6 – 4.0 – (A+) – $5,000*
  • 3.2 – 3.59 (A) $2,500
  • 3.0 – 3.19 (B+) $1,000
  • 2.8 – 2.99 (B) $500

*Awarding of the $5000 Chancellor’s Award requires an overall IELTS of 7.0, with no band below 6.0.

**All entrance scholarships awarded are conditional and are confirmed upon receipt of a sealed, official transcript mailed directly by the issuing institution.

Credential Required: West African Senior School Certificate (WASC) or National Examinations Council (NECO)

Minimum Admissions Requirements: Minimum 5 subjects (including required courses) with grades of C5 or higher (one C6 is acceptable, as long as it’s not a required course)

Awards:

  • A1: 95% (A+) $5,000
  • B2: 85% (A) $2,500
  • B3: 80% (B+) $1,000
  • C4: 75% (B) $500

Language Requirement: Proof of English Language Proficiency

COVID-19 Temporary Requirements

The university is currently reviewing it’s admissions policy to determine what accommodations can be made for Pakistani students who are unable to write their Gr. 12 exams.

Credential Required: Sri Lankan GCE A Levels in two subjects

Additional Documents Required: Sri Lankan O Levels

Language Requirement: Proof of English Language Proficiency is required.

Credential Required: ZIMSEC General Certificate of Education Advanced Level

No English Language Proficiency Required.

English Language Requirements

Proof of English language proficiency is required for international students to attend Algoma University.
