International Admissions Requirements

Admission requirements are unique to various countries and International Curriculums. Please review all requirements carefully to ensure a timely admission to Algoma University.

Your admission will be based on your current secondary school curriculum. Please visit our Admission Requirements page and select your secondary school applicant type to ensure you will be meeting our admission requirements.

AP Transfer Credit Eligibility

Applicants who have completed AP exams with a minimum final grade of 4 will be eligible to receive university credit recognition for up to a maximum of 12 credits (or two full courses). Your results must be sent directly from the College Board in order to be considered for credit.

AP Scholarship Eligibility

Scholarship consideration will be based on the grades achieved on the current secondary school curriculum. No additional awards are offered for completion of AP courses.

Admission Requirements

  • Successful completion of CSEC exams and CAPE exams
    • CSEC – Minimum Grades of 3
    • CAPE – Minimum Grades of 3 – 6 Units altogether, including at least two Unit-2.

Transfer Credit

  • Students who complete Unit-2 courses with a grade of 2 or higher are eligible for transfer credit.
  • A maximum of 12 transfer credits (4 courses) can be awarded.
  • Transfer credits can only be reviewed and awarded upon the receipt of official, sealed transcripts mailed directly from the CXC.

Applicants seeking admission on the basis of the General Certificate of Education (GCE) must submit two academic A-Level subjects with grades no lower than D.  Applicants presenting AS Level courses must submit four academic subjects with grades no lower than D.

Advanced Standing*

Algoma University offers advanced standing of 6 credits (2 courses) for each A-Level Course completed with a grade of C or higher. Transfer credits will be awarded to a maximum of 30 credits (one year).

*Students must present the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level. Algoma U does not currently offer advanced standing for completion of AS-Level courses.

  • Successful completion of the IB Diploma with a minimum of 26 points is accepted for admission.
  • Candidates with 28 points or higher qualify for scholarship consideration. Please refer to the chart below for specific range requirements.
  • Upon attainment of 28 points, a minimum grade of 5 in either Standard (SL) or Higher (HL) Level courses is required for consideration of credit transfer.  Transfer credits may be given to a maximum of 30 credits, which is equivalent to year one of full-time study. Credits will be assessed on an individual basis.

To be considered for admission on the basis of the U.S. high school graduation diploma, applicants must submit an official transcript showing successful completion of five Grade 12 academic courses, including English, with an overall minimum average of 70% (B).

Applicants with U.S. citizenship completing the high school diploma will not be eligible for scholarship consideration. They will, however, be eligible to pay Canadian domestic fees. Please refer to the Fees and Financing section on the website for further information.

Language Requirement: Proof of English Language Proficiency is required.

  • No $5,000 award recommended because the marks are not on a 100% scale.

It is important to note that the National Exam is not a requirement for admission.

Minimum Admissions Requirements: Minimum 5 subjects (including required courses), with all grades C5 or higher (one C6 is acceptable, as long as it’s not a required course)

  • B3: 80% (B+) $1,000
  • C4: 75% (B) $500

Credential Required: Higher Secondary School Certificate (CBSE/ISC/State Board)

Language Requirement: Proof of English Language Proficiency is required.

Credential Required: Sekolah Menengah Atas

Language Requirement: Proof of English Language Proficiency is required

Credential Required: West African Examinations Council (WAEC) or West African Senior School Certificate (WASC)

  • 91-100 (A+) $5,000
  • 81-90 (A) $2,500
  • 71-80 (B+) $1,000
  • 61-70 (B) $500

Credential Required: See General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level OR French Baccalaureate.

Language Requirement: Proof of English Language Proficiency is required for students presenting the French Baccalaureate.

Credential Required: School Leaving Certificate Examination (Years 11 & 12)

Additional Documents: School Leaving Certificate Examination (Year 10)

*Awarding of the $5000 Chancellor’s Award requires an overall IELTS of 7.0, with no band below 6.0.

**All entrance scholarships awarded are conditional and are confirmed upon receipt of a sealed, official transcript mailed directly by the issuing institution.

No English Language Proficiency Required.

English Language Requirements for International Students

Proof of English language proficiency is required for international students to attend Algoma University. One of the following minimum requirements must be met in order to be eligible for undergraduate admission:

  • TOEFL: 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer based), 79 (Internet-based)
  • IELTS Academic: 6.0 overall (including 6.0 in each band of reading, writing, listening and speaking)
  • CanTEST: 4.5
  • CAEL (paper-based or computer edition): 60
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic): 63
  • 3 years of full-time studies in an approved secondary school (in or outside Canada) which follows the Ontario or another Canadian secondary school curriculum.  The minimum grade requirement for Grade 12 English (academic bound) is 70%
  • 3 years of full-time studies in a recognized post-secondary institution in Canada or the USA

If the applicants don’t meet any of the above requirements, they may be admitted to AU’s English for Academic Purposes Program (EAPP). Successful completion of EAPP Level 4 or Level 5 with a grade of 80% or higher will also satisfy the English language requirement, and students will earn 3 credits toward their academic studies.

This EAPP Pathway option to satisfy English Language Requirements is not available to students applying to any programming in the School of Business and Economics.
