Campus Safety

At Algoma University, we are dedicated to protecting the rights and security of everyone on campus while providing a professional, respectful, and safe campus environment.

We have 24-hour video surveillance, campus security, Residence Advisors, and secure-access residences. The Walk Safe Program provides a walking buddy escort for students, staff, and faculty during the evening hours from Monday through Thursday. We run education and awareness programs, and have policies and procedures in place to address issues when they arise.

Telephone Scam

It has been brought to our attention that a number of students have received unsolicited phone calls from individuals indicating they are from Citizenship & Immigration Canada (CIC), Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and/or the police. These highly organized scams are becoming increasingly common across the globe and often include individuals making threats of deportation and other negative impacts based on common personal information they have been able to obtain from other sources (or in some cases, provided directly by the person who has received the call).

For more information, please see view this communication memo.

Walk Safe Program

If you are walking to your car or residence between 8:00 PM and 10:30 PM from Monday to Thursday, you can take advantage of Algoma University's Walk Safe Program.

All you have to do is go to the Walk Safe table located beside the security desk and a Walk Safe attendant will be happy to walk you out to your car, residence, or the George Leach Centre. You can also call 949-2301 ext. 4444, tell Security that you require a Walk Safe attendant and give them your first name, location, and destination.

Off-Campus Students: If you live off campus and would like a Walk Safe attendant to escort you to a destination on campus, you can call and arrange for an attendant to meet you at the edge of campus; just give the location where you wish to meet the Walk Safe attendant and the estimated time of your arrival.

Safety Tips

  • When alone on campus remember to look alert, confident, and walk with a purposeful stride
  • Don’t overload yourself with books, bags, parcels, etc.
  • When going out at night, travel in pairs or groups when possible
  • Always check your car before entering and never leave your car unlocked

When alcohol is involved

  • Use the buddy system: this involves making plans with friends to leave together and watch over each other at parties
  • Never leave your drink out of your sight, if you do, get another one
  • If you’re in a public establishment only accept drinks from a server or bartender
  • If you’re at a party, do not accept open container drinks or drinks from punch bowls
Have you encountered a concerning behavior?

We’ve got an Emergency Response Plan (ERP)

Algoma University places the health, safety and well-being of all students, faculty, staff and visitors as its most important priority. Despite having policies and procedures in place to address various health and safety issues, an emergency may nonetheless occur. For this reason, an Emergency Response Plan (ERP) has been developed to deal with those types of events that require a greater concerted effort to effectively resolve the situation. This ERP is specific to the Algoma University main campus only and does not include our Brampton or Timmins campuses.
