Summer Indigenous Institute, July 4-30, 2020.

The Summer Indigenous Institute (SII) is a free month-long transition program for Indigenous students. Launched in July 2019, the program supports Indigenous students as they transition to their undergraduate studies.

The program is offered to Indigenous students entering their first year of university at Nipissing University, Algoma University, Lakehead University or Laurentian University as well as Indigenous students who are completing grade 11 or 12, are college transfers or are mature students and considering university.

The Summer Indigenous Institute offers two introductory Indigenous Studies courses delivered remotely, plus an on-campus capstone experiential learning event in the fall or winter of 2020.

This program supports students as they learn skills necessary for success at university and provides them with an advanced look at university life while also giving them a head start on their credits. Indigenous faculty teach the courses and the students have access to upper-year Indigenous student mentors. Enji giigdoyang, the Office of Indigenous Initiatives offers academic, personal and cultural support activities to students in the program.

For student applicants entering their first year of university, course credits are transferable to Nipissing University, Algoma University, Lakehead University or Laurentian University.

For student applicants who are currently completing grade 11 or 12, college or are mature students, they can choose from the non-credit option and will receive a certificate of completion, or the for-credit option.  (Credits can be retained at Nipissing University once the student meets degree admission requirements.)

The cost for the summer tuition, plus travel, accommodation and meals for the on-campus event in the fall/winter are covered by the university. There is no cost to students.

Don’t have reliable technology? Students enrolled in the program will have access to technology provided by Nipissing University for the duration of the courses in July.

Please join us for a Facebook Live Information Session on Wednesday May 20th at 1:00 p.m. EST.   We will discuss the program and answer your questions! @IndigenousNU
