(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – March 20, 2018): The World University Service of Canada (WUSC) Local Committee of Algoma University will be shining a light on women’s education in the developing world on March 24th in a Shine a Light dinner fundraiser, from 6:30pm – 10:00pm in the Doc Brown Lounge.
For over 30 years, the WUSC Student Refugee Program has been providing opportunities for young refugees to pursue higher education in Canada. Among the students sponsored by WUSC, men greatly outnumber women because few girls have the opportunity to finish high school. In many classrooms, boys outnumber girls 4:1.
WUSC has been working to increase the availability of quality primary, secondary, and post-secondary education in refugee camps in order to decrease the gender gap in education between refugee boys and girls. Through WUSC’s Shine a Light campaign, WUSC has been providing refugee girls with solar lamps and after-school programs in a safe learning environment so that they may complete their studies.
In an effort to raise funds and awareness for the Shine a Light campaign, the University’s WUSC Committee will be hosting a dinner by lantern light. Funds raised will go toward creating a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable world.
Those in attendance will hear from current and former Student Refugee Program students and learn more about WUSC and the Shine a Light campaign.
Tickets for the event are $20.00 each and can be purchased online.
