(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – January 7, 2019): Things are ramping up across all three Algoma University campuses this winter term, with approximately 300 new students welcomed this week to the Sault Ste. Marie, Brampton and Timmins campuses.
“It’s exciting to welcome so many new students to the university this January,” said Director of Enrolment Management Brent Krmpotich. “This is the largest January intake the university has ever had. Our teams have worked really hard to attract new enrolment to each of our campuses and our student success strategies have been designed to ensure that the transition to university life is as smooth as possible.”
Students from across Canada and over 22 countries are joining Algoma University this term, and as a precursor to a full week of ‘Frost Week’ activity, the University was focused on hosting an International Student Orientation Program this weekend. This two-day special event was held to welcome students to Canada and their new communities.
“We have many great activities planned across all three campuses this week,” said Emilene Dumoulin, Support Services Coordinator at Algoma University in Timmins. “Frost Week allows our students to connect with faculty, staff, and fellow classmates. This week provides students the opportunity to learn more about what Algoma has to offer, and to participate in activities that support a successful transition to university life.”
Pauline Danquah, President of the Student Union (AUSU) is busy with her team as well. “We are working hard to ensure that the students arriving have a warm welcome and comfortable transition. We are planning events that include all three campuses this year, and our focus is to enhance student life/experience while they are with Algoma. Events are being designed to increase participation and build a sense of belonging and community.”
This winter semester marks the latest in a trend of increasing enrolment for Algoma University, with notable growth in key programming areas including Computer Science, Business and Biology. The University is targeting a growth of between 15-20 percent for the 2018-2019 year, and is on track to do so, with construction and renovations underway in both Brampton and Sault Ste. Marie. “To support the growth, the University is currently undergoing construction projects in Brampton to prepare a new space that will house the expansion of the School of Business and Economics,” said VP of Finance and Operations Robert Battisti. “Renovations are also continuing in Sault Ste. Marie, which now includes a new International Student Support Office and Student Lounge.”
President Asima Vezina was on both the Sault Ste. Marie and Brampton campuses this weekend, meeting with staff and students and is planning a trip to Timmins at the end of the month. “A big welcome to all of our students, new and returning. We are so happy you have chosen to study as part of the AU community and look forward to sharing in a wonderful new year of memories, unique experiences and wonderful learning opportunities.”
