Algoma University Thunderbirds Announce New Men’s Basketball Head Coach

(Sault Ste. Marie- July 26, 2019): The Algoma University Thunderbirds Varsity Athletics Program is excited to announce the hiring of Etienne Jacquet as the new Head Coach of the Men’s Basketball Team. Coach Jacquet will take over a program that has grown competitively since entering the OUA in 2013. 

Coach Jacquet has more than 20 years of coaching experience at various levels. He holds a Master’s Degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University – Irvine, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports and Recreation Management from Concordia University – Chicago. In addition, Jacquet is a Level 3 certified coach through the National Coaching Certification Program.  

“We are excited to welcome Etienne to the Thunderbird family,” shared Director of Student Experience, Dave Trudelle. “He brings a wealth of knowledge from his experience in player development that will help our players grow and succeed. Coach Jacquet has also helped grow basketball programs in various communities and understands the importance of a connected system across all levels of the sport. Having a Head Coach with this skill set is very important to the Thunderbirds as we continue to develop strong community connections within Sault Ste. Marie.” 

Coach Jacquet has coached at the high school level with Franco-Cité and Deslauriers High Schools. He was an assistant coach on the Ottawa Skyhawks Professional Team and head coach in the OCAA with the La Cité Collégiale Coyotes. Most recently he has been a coach in the Thetford Basketball Academy, including coaching their Men’s and Women’s CEGEP teams and one of the founders of Team Thetford Men’s Basketball. During his time there, his teams won two provincial high school and two provincial college championships in addition to numerous tournaments in Canada and the United States.  

“I am excited about the opportunity to coach at the university level with the Algoma Thunderbirds,” Coach Jacquet shared. “I genuinely feel fortunate to pursue my dream and share my vision with a group of young men that will strive to improve and reach a high level of success on and off the court.”
