Algoma University Receives Support from City of Brampton for Continued Downtown Expansion

(BRAMPTON, ON- August 7, 2019) –  The ongoing development of post-secondary education options available in downtown Brampton took another significant step forward today thanks to an expanded partnership between the City of Brampton and Algoma University. This morning, Brampton City Council supported the request to invest $7.3 million in grant funding spread over three years to facilitate a planned second phase expansion of Algoma University’s academic programming and facilities within Garden Square. The university will contribute $27 million to the project over the same period.

The funding will immediately support expansion plans that enable Algoma University’s enrolment capacity to grow to 1,000 students by 2023. By Fall 2020, degree and certificate offerings in Computer Science, Psychology, and Community Economic and Social Development will be available. These additions will complement current programming offered through the Algoma University School of Business and Economics. These new programs, along with anticipated future programming in Law and Justice and Social Work, will be housed within the Centre for Social, Cultural & Economic Innovation.

Phase II construction will commence this fall.

Expansion of Algoma University programming in Brampton has been identified by both the Algoma University Board of Governors and the Academic Senate as a key strategic priority as the institution strives to grow overall enrolment across all campuses to 3,000 students by 2023-24.
