Today, Algoma University celebrated their 10th anniversary in Brampton with the news that the University’s next phase of development will see their School of Business and Economics opening this fall at their current location in the heart of the downtown.

This exciting news adds to the buzz around new developments and transformation in Brampton’s core, particularly as it relates to new post-secondary options for students from Brampton and the Greater Toronto Area. The School of Business and Economics will offer programming in Business Administration (with specializations in Accounting, Economics, Human Resource Management, and Marketing) and Finance and Economics. Graduates of the programs are well prepared to complete Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) and Canadian Human Resource Professional (CHRP) designations.

Eligible secondary school graduates will now be able to apply direct from high school for admission to these programs.

Algoma U’s President and Vice-Chancellor, Asima Vezina, shared that today’s announcement is a result of conversations held over the past six months with the City of Brampton, the Brampton Board of Trade, the City of Brampton Economic Development Office, local business leaders, current staff, students, and alumni. The University intentionally aligned its planning with Brampton’s 2040 vision, the City’s plans for the Centre for Innovation and Collaboration and the new Ryerson University campus. “We look forward to moving forward with these partners to meet the educational, training, and development needs of Brampton,” she said.

Representatives from a wide range of organizations were in attendance with representatives from the University including students, alumni, and staff.  Dignitaries and special guests included Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South, City Councillor and Acting Mayor Doug Whillans, Todd Letts, CEO of the Brampton Board of Trade, and other community leaders.

“The creation of the Algoma University School of Business and Economics marks an exciting next phase in the development of post-secondary programming options in downtown Brampton.  As a result of this announcement, a greater number of prospective students will have an opportunity to complete university-level programming in our community. These students will help support the needs of our business community for the long-term benefit of Brampton and the greater Peel Region,” said Todd Letts, CEO of the Brampton Board of Trade.

The School of Business and Economics is forecasted to bring significant enrolment increases to the Brampton campus with 500 additional students expected within the next three years.

Our government is committed to ensuring young Canadians have the tools and opportunities they need to succeed, and I am glad our post-secondary partners like Algoma share that vision,” said MP Sonia Sidhu, Member of Parliament for Brampton South.

Cathy Denomme, Director of the School of Business and Economics shared with the community the University’s enthusiasm for the expansion of educational opportunities for business education in Brampton. Algoma’s faculty and staff are engaging in dialogue with members of the Brampton business community regarding expanded co-operative education and internship placements, experiential learning activities, and undergraduate research projects.

The expansion of Algoma’s programming in Brampton supports the City of Brampton’s efforts to expand post-secondary access and to develop the workforce needed to drive economic development within the local community.
