(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – (September 3, 2020): Algoma University has launched a new partnership with Mitacs, a national not-for-profit organization that powers innovation across Canada by providing high-quality internships for post-secondary students. These internships help businesses and not-for-profits with their R&D needs and to make the necessary pivots to address COVID-19 challenges.

This partnership will allow Algoma University undergraduate students greater access to Mitacs’s programs, which offer high-quality experiential learning and career development opportunities.

It will also support businesses and non-profits in Sault Ste. Marie and Northern Ontario attract and retain the talent they need to grow the northern economy.

“Providing our students with dynamic opportunities for experiential learning while assisting in supporting the research being conducted by our faculty is very important to Algoma University,” shared Vice-President Academic and Research Dr. Donna Rogers. “We are excited about this new partnership and I personally am looking forward to the experiences our students will have.”

“This important partnership between Algoma University and Mitacs will equip students with local hands-on learning opportunities, helping to address the need for local talent to live and work in the communities where they learn,” said Ross Romano, Minister of Colleges and Universities. “It is paramount that Ontario’s postsecondary institutions continue to work with local and regional industry partners to continue ensuring our postsecondary students are highly trained and ready for the jobs of tomorrow.”

One of the programs offered by Mitacs, the Research Training Award, is a unique program that provides undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to gain collaborative experience with faculty conducting research. Eligible undergraduate students will work closely with faculty to gain hands-on research experience in their field of study. “The opportunity to provide students with research training during the economic downturn will help ensure talented university students from Algoma are contributing to Ontario’s recovery while building skills that our economy will need in the future,” shared Mitacs CEO and Scientific Director John Hepburn.
