Craig Fowler brings extensive experience to expanding downtown campus

Algoma University is pleased to announce that following an extensive search process, Craig Fowler has been selected to join the University’s senior executive team as Principal of the Algoma University Brampton Campus for a five-year term.  

“This is an exciting time for Algoma University as we work closely with city officials and other key partners to build a stronger University presence in Brampton. The campus is currently experiencing rapid growth with forecasts expected to surpass 1000 FTE by 2023. Craig’s senior leadership experience within the University and public service sectors will be a tremendous asset to our team as we continue to develop programming and partnership opportunities within the city’s downtown core,” stated Asima Vezina, President and Vice-Chancellor of Algoma University. 

Fowler brings his experience as Associate Vice-President, Administration and External Relations for Laurentian University where for approximately 4 years he assumed responsibility and oversight for their Barrie campus including administrative operations, student recruitment, marketing, and community, government and alumni relations. 

In his most recent role as Associate Vice-President of Innovation, Research Partnerships, and Economic Development with Laurentian University, Fowler was responsible for expanding the institution’s research partnerships, strategic initiatives, and commercialization and incubation opportunities. He recently led the team that developed, programmed and operationalized the 60,000 sq ft Cliff Fielding Research, Innovation and Engineering building at Laurentian University. 

Earlier in his career, Fowler held a series of progressively senior leadership positions with the Government of Ontario in various ministries, including Finance, Economic Development and Research and Innovation. During his time with the Province, Fowler led teams that were responsible for diverse portfolios including delivering over $1.5 Billion in research funding, developing the Ontario Innovation Agenda, supporting the Drummond Commission and working directly with innovation and economic development stakeholders locally, nationally and internationally. 

Fowler holds a Master’s degree in Local Economic Development and a Bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning, both from the University of Waterloo. He has also completed Executive programs at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and Ivey School of Business.
