(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – March 21, 2018): The Anishinaabe People’s Council of Algoma University will be hosting a private screening of critically-acclaimed movie Indian Horse at the Galaxy Cinemas, prior to the national release of the film in April. The private screening is slated for March 31st at 9:30am.
Indian Horse is based on the award-winning best-seller of the same name by Richard Wagamese. The movie follows eight-year old Saul Indian Horse, who is removed from his Anishinaabe family and placed in a residential school. While in the residential school, he is not allowed to speak his native language or embrace his cultural traditions. Saul finds salvation in hockey, and secretly teaches himself the game, developing skills that take him away from the residential school and into a professional career. However, he is haunted by his memories of the residential school, which threaten his promising future. Saul draws upon the spirit of his ancestors and the Anishinaabe people to begin his journey of healing.
Actors include Sladen Peltier, Edna Manitowabi, Dylan Cook, Johnny Issaluk, Forrest Goodluck, Will Strongheart, among others.
Clint Eastwood is one of the film’s star-studded Executive Producers.
Following the movie screening, a panel will be held, featuring actor Dylan Cook and former residential school survivors from 11:00am – 11:45am. Cook plays Stu Little Chief in the feature film and is best-known for his role as Slash in the hit television series Letterkenny.
Indian Horse has played at seven film festivals, winning six awards, including: Winner of the Audience Choice, Best Canadian Fiction Award; Winner of the Audience Award for Best Dramatic Feature; and Best Feature Film Runner Up.
Health and cultural services will be available throughout the morning.
Indian Horse will be in theatres across Canada on April 13th.
