Algoma U Thunderbirds Wrestlers Earn Two Silver Medals at OUA Championships

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON- February 4, 2019): This weekend the Algoma University Thunderbirds Wrestling teams competed at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Wrestling Championships, taking home two individual silver medals in Men’s and Women’s categories! One hundred and twenty varsity wrestlers from 10 universities participated in this year’s event hosted by the University of Guelph on Saturday, February 2nd, 2019.

“Watching our athletes compete with such fierce determination was a privilege, and they should be proud of the job they did,” shared Director of Student Experience Dave Trudelle. “To have four wrestlers in medal matches with two winning silver standings is a great accomplishment and we look forward to what our wrestlers can achieve at the U-Sports Nationals!”

Brody Collison (Men-54kg), a third-year Business student, and Riley Tubaro (Women-51kg), a second-year Biology major, took home silver medals in their respective divisions.  Both student-athletes will represent Algoma University at the Usport National Championships taking place at the University of Calgary from February 21st to 23rd, 2019.

“Having Brody and Riley place 2nd at the OUA Championships means a lot for our wrestling program,” shared Head Coach Trevor Manchester. “To have competitors achieve this level of success speaks well for Algoma University. Both Brody and Riley have put in extreme levels of personal effort to get to this point.  From morning workouts to managing their diets, attending classes and prepping for exams; their lives as student-athletes is very time intensive. To be able to also attain athletic success is something that our entire wrestling program is very proud to embrace.”

Both wrestlers gave it their all this weekend, and are ready to take on Nationals. “This weekend was unbelievable,” said Brody Collison. “Qualifying for the Usports Championship again is a huge step forward for both me and Algoma’s wrestling program. Algoma is making big strides as a program and it shows with two qualifying athletes.”

“I’m really excited for the chance to compete at the national level,” said Riley Tubero. “Last year I got hurt right before Usports and could no longer compete. It really makes me feel like all my hard work this year means something and I really focused on taking my training to the next level. Representing Algoma is an honour and I am so proud to wear its singlet!”

Good luck at Nationals Brody and Riley!
