Algoma U Offers Educational Opportunities to Steel Industry Employees

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – June 9, 2016): Today, Algoma University announced an agreement with Essar Steel Algoma Inc. and TenarisAlgomaTubes, which will allow employees affected by market downturns to earn a degree at the University, tuition-free.

“We are pleased to be working with Essar Steel Algoma Inc. and TenarisAlgomaTubes to support their employees impacted by the challenges faced in the steel industry,” said Algoma University President and Vice Chancellor, Dr. Craig Chamberlin. “As the steel industry continues to be affected by difficult market conditions, we are working together to ensure that those affected have an opportunity to enhance their skills and explore career opportunities either within the steel industry or elsewhere. As the community’s University, we feel the responsibility to respond to the needs of community members.”

Eligible employees at Essar Steel Algoma Inc. and TenarisAlgomaTubes will be able to earn a degree at Algoma U tuition-free. Currently, Algoma U offers degrees in over 30 disciplines, spanning the liberal arts, sciences, and professional programs. Employees taking part in the program will have the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Fine Arts, or a Bachelor of Social Work degree.

“Tenaris is pleased to partner with Algoma University to support programs that generate opportunity and skill development for our employees during this market downturn,” said Mark Rehoric, Industrial Relations Manager at Tenaris.

“We applaud Algoma University for opening their doors and giving these employees the opportunity to continue their education. Essar Steel Algoma is pleased to support a program that will help transition these individuals into exciting new career paths,” remarked Jim Rennie, Vice President Human Resources, Essar Steel Algoma Inc.

Interested employees should contact their Human Resources Department for details on eligibility and the application process. In order to qualify for the program, participants must enrol full-time at Algoma University.  Credit recognition will be given to those with previous post-secondary experience.
