(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON: October 13, 2017): The Visual Arts program at Algoma University is pleased to announce that Maggie Groat will be giving a public artist talk on October 16th, at 7:30pm on campus in the Shingwauk Auditorium.
Maggie Groat is an artist who works with a variety of media including paper, sculpture, textiles, site-specific interventions, and publications. Her current research surrounds site-responsiveness with regards to shifting territories, alternative and decolonial ways-of-being, methodologies of collage, and the transformation of salvaged materials into utilitarian objects for speculation, vision, and action. Groat studied Visual Art and Philosophy at York University before attending the University of Guelph, where she received a Master’s of Fine Arts in 2010. She has taught at the University of Guelph, the University of Toronto, and at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, where she was the Audain Artist Scholar in Residence in 2014. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Art Gallery of York University, Western Front, SFU Audain Gallery, Rodman Hall Art Centre, Walter Philips Gallery, and more. She is the editor of The Lake and ALMANAC. In 2015 she was long listed for the Sobey Art Award.
During her time in Sault Ste. Marie, Groat will be presenting on her own work as well as meeting with students and alumni of Algoma University’s Visual Arts program. Groat’s work can be viewed online at maggiegroat.tumblr.com.
