Algoma U Honours Team Jacobs

(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – February 12, 2018): On Wednesday, Algoma University will honour the Team Jacobs rink in a special roadside dedication ceremony, taking place on the Algoma U campus.

Team Jacobs, consisting of skip Brad Jacobs, second E. J. Harnden, lead Ryan Harnden, and third Ryan Fry, earned an Olympic gold medal at the 2014 Sochi, Russia Winter Games in men’s curling. Prior to representing Canada in the Olympics, the foursome won the 2013 Tim Horton’s Brier and earned silver at the 2013 Ford World Men’s Curling Championship.

Three of the four curlers are alumni of the University. E. J. Harnden earned his Bachelor of Business in 2006; Jacobs earned his Bachelor of Arts in Geography in 2007; and Ryan Harnden earned his Bachelor of Arts in Geography in 2014. Jacobs was also a member of the 2004 Algoma Thunderbirds men’s curling team, which brought home the first OCAA gold medal for the University.

To celebrate their success, the University will formally name the roadway in front of the George Leach Centre “Team Jacobs Drive”.

“Algoma University is excited to honour Brad Jacobs, E. J. Harnden, Ryan Harnden, and Ryan Fry through the official naming of ‘Team Jacobs Drive,’” said President and Vice-Chancellor, Asima Vezina. “We believe ‘Team Jacobs Drive’ will be a continuous reminder to our community that when we believe we can, and when we combine that belief with effort, dedication, and commitment, we can all realize our dreams.”

The dedication ceremony will take place at 3:00pm outside of the George Leach Centre. A reception will follow in The Speakeasy.

The ceremony will act as the informal kick-off of the 2018 OUA Curling Championships, hosted by the University, at the Community First Curling Centre, from February 15 – 19.
