(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON – October 31, 2018): Algoma University’s 6th annual Community Trick or Treat was a resounding success, with record numbers in participants and donations to both the United Way and the Algoma U Food Pantry.
“We are overwhelmed by the generosity of our community,” said Asima Vezina, President and Vice-Chancellor of Algoma University. “Our community came together to celebrate the spirit of the season, while also giving to support two worthwhile causes, the United Way and our Food Pantry. We love hosting this event and welcoming so many people onto our campus for a fun evening.”
Last night, over 3,100 community members participated in the event, trick or treating across campus. Up by over 500 participants from 2017, the University credits the good weather and community support for the increase in trick or treaters.
The community was generous in their donations. $6,108.29 was raised for the United Way, an increase of almost $700 from the previous year. The University also collected non-perishable food items for the Algoma U Food Pantry. Over 1,500 canned goods were collected, which will fill the shelves of the food bank.
The University would like to extend their sincere thanks to the local community for their generosity and support of this event. Algoma would also like to thank Sault Ste. Marie Mayor, Christian Provenzano, the Sault Ste. Marie Professional Firefighters Association, and volunteers from the United Way who helped assist with the success of the evening.
