Music Program Students at Algoma University

Our Music Program

Now offered as a four-year Honours Bachelor of Arts in Music, the program provides advanced training in performance, composition, and musicianship. Students complete a junior recital in third year, followed by a final-year capstone project and full-length recital.

Alongside their artistic development, students build career-ready skills through courses in grant writing, project management, and Canadian business. The program balances technical training with creative growth, with opportunities to develop as both solo performers and collaborative musicians. Students study music theory, history, and audio arts while exploring a range of musical traditions, preparing them for diverse pathways in music and beyond.

Algoma University Music Department is committed to fostering an inclusive, student-centred environment in which every individual is supported in the development of their musicianship, and provided with essential skills for realizing long-term career goals. Performance and comprehensive exposure to the varied opportunities of the current music industry lie at the heart of the program, with weekly performance classes designed to refine skills, build confidence, and cultivate each young artist’s unique musical signature.

As a four-year Honours program, students progress from foundational to advanced study in performance, musicianship, and ensemble work, alongside courses in audio arts, conducting, composition, songwriting, music theory, and history across both Western and non-Western traditions. The program offers flexibility to pursue specialized interests, including opportunities for paid internships and performance experiences throughout the Sault Ste. Marie region.

Our faculty are active performers, educators, and researchers with national and international experience. Through close mentorship and individualized instruction, students develop both technical skill and artistic voice while engaging with music as a dynamic and evolving form of expression.

In the final year, students bring their learning together through a personalized capstone project and graduating recital, preparing them for careers in the arts and culture sector, entrepreneurship, teacher education, or further study.

Graduates pursue a wide range of creative careers, including performance, composition, education, arts administration, music therapy, and work in film, television, and game scoring. For example, one alumnus is a conductor and music director for Broadway productions in New York City, contributing to a musical that has received multiple Tony Awards. Whatever path they choose, graduates leave with the skills, experience, and industry knowledge to move forward with confidence.
