Joint Admissions Program

The joint admissions agreement between Algoma University (AU) and Northern College (NC) allows new and current students at NC to secure their admission to AU while they are completing their studies. The program affords eligible students a smooth transition to AU to complete their degree program.

Who can apply?

Students can apply for joint admissions before their first year or during the first 30 days of their first or second year at NC. The Joint Admissions Agreement is open to Northern College (NC) students, new or returning, who intend to complete one of the following degrees at Algoma University (AU).

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA general/honours)
  • Bachelor of Science (BSc general/honours)
  • Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)
  • Bachelor of Computer Science (BCOSC general/honours)
  • Bachelor of Social Work (BSW)
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA)

What are the benefits?

  1. Students can earn a conditional offer of admission to AU before completing their studies at NC;
  2. Students can plan their future academic path through college and university more efficiently; and
  3. The Joint Admissions Agreement bypasses application fees and transcript fees.

How to apply?

  1. Apply directly online to Algoma University;
  2. In your application, select Joint Admission as your basis and choose the program most relevant to your diploma program;
  3. The Admissions Office at Algoma University will confirm the receipt of your application and request copies of all relevant transcripts (high school, college and university);
  4. While completing your studies at Northern College, you can speak with academic advisors at both institutions to review your selected college course options for transferability into a degree program; and
  5. Upon completion and receipt of your diploma, you will submit your final official transcripts for review by the admissions office.

Admissions requirements

To be eligible for admission to AU under the Joint Admissions Agreement, students must present a minimum 2.00 GPA in their college program and receipt of the diploma – for transfer credit recognition, students must present a minimum 2.50 GPA.

In the case of the BCOSC, BSC or BBA, relevant high school prerequisites or acceptable equivalents may be required to complete entry into a degree program. For all transfer credit policies, please refer to the appropriate sections of the College Pathways book.

A final offer of admission and transfer credit is assessed on an individual basis and is based on the diploma earned, overall GPA, supplementary applications (auditions and portfolios) and relevant high school prerequisites.

Navigate to our Transfer Credit Policy section for more details.

Students admitted to a winter term during an academic year will be eligible for one-half the award (minimum 12 credits) during their first year. Awards are decided using the overall average obtained by the candidate as calculated at the time of admission.

Effective January 2018, pathways scholarships will be awarded to college diploma graduates who have completed their diploma within 12 months of their start term at Algoma University.
