Social Work Admissions

The Honours degree in Social Work (HBSW) is a four-year professional program. Studies and can be completed in Sault Ste. Marie or Timmins.

Admissions is a two-step process:

  1. Students are admitted to the first two years from high school, college, university or as mature students.
  2. All students must apply to be admitted into the third year after all of the pre-requisites are complete. The third and fourth years are the Professional Years of the program.

  • Students will be assessed individually by the Office of the Registrar and may receive transfer credits depending on their Grade Point Average (GPA) and program of study
  • College graduates from all disciplines are encouraged to apply and have their transfer credits individually assessed

  • Applicants must be 20 years of age by the end of the calendar year to which they are applying; have been away from secondary or post-secondary school for a minimum of 1 year; and be a Canadian citizen or Permanent resident

If you are not a current Algoma University student, please contact us prior to submitting your application to ensure that you are meeting the eligibility requirements.

The admissions requirements for the Professional Years (years three and four) of the Honours Bachelor of Social Work program require that students have the following complete by the end of the spring 2019 semester for a 2019 September start date:

  • A minimum of 70% in SWRK 1006, SWRK 1007, SWRK 2106, and SWRK 2107 or have achieved these courses through credit recognition (e.g., transfer credits)
  • A minimum cumulative average of 70% in a minimum of 60 completed university credits or through credit recognition (1st and 2nd year on the current Social Work Audit Sheet)
  • The required courses (27 credits) and elective courses (33 credits) or credit recognition:
    • Required courses (27 credits): SWRK 1006, SWRK 1007, SWRK 2106, SWRK 2107, SWRK 2356, SWRK 2127, SWRK 2406, SOCI 1016, and SOCI 1017 or ANIS 1006
    • Elective courses (33 credits)

Please note that:

  • There is no direct entry pathway into the Professional Years
  • Applications are no longer being accepted for September 2019 as the deadline has passed.
  • You may apply for September 2020 beginning in mid November 2019. Please check back on this webpage.

  5. Completion of the exam on February 8, 2019
  6. If you are not a current Algoma University student, please have official transcripts sent directly to Algoma university by your previous institution(s)
