Fines for Overdue Materials

  1. All users are responsible for all material borrowed on their accounts.
  2. All users are responsible for checking their due dates.
  3. The library will notify library users of overdue materials, but users are responsible for checking their due dates.
  4. There is a charge of $0.50 per day for each overdue item borrowed from the general collection.
  5. The maximum fine per book is $10.00.
  6. The charge for overdue material from the Reserve Collection is $2.00 per day for each item.
  7. The charge for overdue Interlibrary Loan Material is $2.00 per day for each item.
    • Users will be billed $1.00 per books and $5.00 per article for materials borrowed through Interlibrary Loan, but not picked up.
  8. If overdue materials are not returned and fines are not paid as a result of receiving a notice from the library, a bill will be issued.
  9. The charge for billing outstanding debts is $1.00 per bill issued.


Holds

  1. Should items currently on loan from the general or reserve collections be requested by other library users, "holds" may be placed on the items.
  2. An individual requesting that a "hold" be placed on an item will be informed as soon as the material is returned to the library by the previous user. The material will then be held for a period of twenty-four hours.
  3. Should the individual who requested the "hold" no longer require the item, the next individual (if any) requesting the item to be placed on hold will be contacted.
  4. In the case of a periodical, the library user will provide the library staff with the title, volume and issue number of the periodical. The library user will be contacted as soon as the item is located.


PHOTOCOPYING

  1. Reference works, periodicals and government documents do not circulate, but there are photocopying machines on the main and ground floor of the library.
  2. Copies cost 10 cents a page. Machines accept cash.
  3. Student copying accounts can be re-charged at the ITS Helpdesk.
  4. Cautionary notices regarding infringement of copyright are posted near the photocopiers. Serious penalties can result from illegal photocopying.
  5. All publications formats (e.g., print, film, microform, video, audio, and electronic) are covered by copyright.


COPYRIGHT

  1. The Copyright Act provides that a holder of copyright has the sole right to produce or reproduce the work or any substantial part of it in any form, or to authorize someone else to do so.
  2. The "fair dealing" provision of the Act do not denote "rights", but rather a statutory defence to charges of infringement of the law. The defendant must be able to establish that the use of the work constitutes "fair dealing" for the purposes of private study, research, criticism, review, or newspaper summary. Fair dealing cannot be a defence to substantial copying or multiple copying of a work.
  3. Individuals using library copying equipment (photocopier, microform reader/printer, recording hardware) are responsible for observing copyright law.

Copied Material Held in the Library

  1. Any Materials added to collections in the Wishart Library must comply with copyright law.
  2. Faculty requests for photocopied materials to be placed in the reserve readings collection must be accompanied by proof of permission by the copyright holder to copy. Reprints furnished by publishers will be sought wherever possible.
