Borrowing Services
To borrow materials from the Arthur A. Wishart Library, an individual must belong to one of the following categories:
- Algoma U students
- Algoma U faculty members (Full-time and Sessional)
- Algoma U administrators or staff members
- Registered Readers (external community members not part of the Algoma U campus)
CATEGORIES OF LIBRARY USERS
Algoma U Students
- All students must be currently enrolled in the current academic session at Algoma University College and in possession of a student identification card with the appropriate validation sticker. Please have this card with you for all library transactions.
- Students may borrow up to fifteen (15) books at one time from the general collection for a 21 day period.
- Students may have loans of books renewed for an additional 21 day period as long as:
- the books have not been requested by another library user;
- the loans have not been renewed before (only one renewal is permitted), and;
- the books are not overdue.
- Students may borrow materials in the reserve reading collection for the length of time specified by the instructor.
- Students with library debts outstanding will be identified on the Library Delinquent List (see Fines and Holds for more information).
Students whose names appear on the Library Delinquent List
- Students whose names appear on the Library Delinquent List will have their borrowing privileges suspended until all outstanding library debts are paid.
- Students will not receive their university transcripts, nor will they be permitted to register for courses until all outstanding library debts (e.g., fines, charges for lost books, interlibrary loan costs) have been paid.
- Upon the settlement of all library debts, borrowing privileges will be restored and the Registrar's office will be notified.
Algoma U Faculty (Full-Time and Sessional)
- Full-time faculty and sessional instructors may borrow books from the general collection for a 120 day period and may renew loans for an additional 21 day period.
- All faculty may request an extended loan period of the current academic session. However, faculty members will be asked to return materials that have been requested by other library users.
- Full-time faculty and sessional instructors may borrow periodicals for a limited period with the permission of the department supervisor or the Library Director.
- Full-time faculty and sessional instructors may borrow government publications for a limited period with the permission of the department supervisor or the Library Director.
- Full-time faculty and sessional instructors may borrow materials that they have directed to be placed in the reserve reading course.
- Full-time faculty and sessional instructors with library debts will be identified on the Library Delinquent List (see Fines and Holds for more information).
Algoma U Faculty (Full-Time and Sessional) whose names appear on the Library Delinquent List
- Full-time faculty and sessional instructors whose names appear on the Library Delinquent List will have their borrowing privileges suspended until all outstanding library debts are paid.
- Upon the settlement of all library debts, borrowing privileges will be restored.
Algoma U Administrators and Staff Members
- Members of the university administration and staff have the same borrowing privileges as students.
Registered Readers
- Registered Readers may fall into the following categories:
- any high school student;
- any Canadian university student not enrolled at Algoma U;
- any Canadian university faculty member in good standing with his or her home institution;
- any adult in the community;
- Algoma University College Alumni.
Applications for Registered Reader Borrowing Privileges
- Application forms are available at the library circulation desk.
- High school students wishing to borrow books must complete an application form signed by their school principal and school librarian.
- High school students under 18 years of age must also have their application signed by a parent or guardian.
Borrowing Privileges
- Registered Readers must present a valid library card in order to borrow materials.
- Registered Reader cards issued to registered readers are valid for a calendar year.
- Registered Readers may borrow up to four (4) items from the Circulating Collection for a 21 day period.
- Registered readers may renew loans in person (telephone renewal is allowed if the reader resides outside the city of Sault Ste. Marie) for an additional three week period provided that
- the books have not been requested by another library user;
- the loans have not been previously renewed (only one renewal is permitted);
- the books are not overdue.
- Registered readers with outstanding library debts will be identified on the Library Delinquent List and will have their borrowing privileges suspended until all debts have been paid (see Fines and Holds for more information).
Fee for Borrowing Privileges
- The fee paid by registered readers for library borrowing privileges is $20.00 per year.
- Special arrangements have been made for Sault College and Lake Superior State University students on a per term basis.
Cancellation of Borrowing Privileges
- Borrowing privileges will be cancelled if a borrower uses them irresponsibly (e.g., by lending a library card to another individual, by damaging books, or by failing to pay fines, seeking to circumvent the library's policies, etc.).
- All library users with borrowing privileges are personally responsible for loss or damage of books signed out in their names, as well as for all accumulated fines.
