Algoma U Basketball Goes 4-0 on Weekend

 

Men’s Team Beats #1 Ranked Team in Canada

The Algoma University Thunderbird Basketball program went undefeated this past weekend, as both the women and men beat ‌Sheridan and St. Clair at the George Leach Centre. On Saturday, the Women’s team was in tough against a strong Sheridan squad. Karissa Kajorinne (15 points) led the way for the Thunderbirds as they beat the Bruins 60-54. The Women followed the performance with another solid outing on Sunday afternoon, defeating the St. Clair Saints 65-42. Corina Bruni scored 25 points in the win. Algoma is now 13-1 on the season, and sits alone in 1st place in the OCAA West division.

 

Saturday night proved to be the highlight of the weekend, as the Algoma Men’s team faced the #1 ranked (CCAA) Sheridan Bruins. The Thunderbirds got off to a strong start and maintained a steady lead throughout the game, up by as many as 12 mid-way through the 3rd quarter. Sheridan rallied in the 4th quarter to tie the game with 8 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Trevor Williams. Algoma hung tough throughout the overtime and sealed the victory on a 3-pointer by first year guard Samy Mohammed in the final seconds to win 81-78 (OT). Jovain Wilson led the Thunderbirds with 32 points. Mohammed added 15 in the win. Algoma was also successful in avoiding a let-down on Sunday, as they cruised to a 82-52 against St. Clair. Jovain Wilson scored 19 points in the win over the Saints. Algoma now sits in a tie for 5th place in the OCAA West division with a record of 9-6.

 

Both Algoma basketball teams are home next weekend (Sun, Feb 3) as they host the Lambton Lions at the George Leach Centre. Women scheduled to tip-off at 1pm, followed by Men’s game at 3pm.
