(SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - March 10, 2010) On May 1st and 2nd, 2010, high school students from across the province will again be given the opportunity to make new friends and push themselves to the limit racing across 25km of wilderness terrain. The fourth annual High School Adventure Challenge returns to Huntsville, Ontario at Deerhurst Resort, the site of this year's G8 summit.
The course will again be designed by Lawrence Foster, an international course designer and renowned eco-challenge competitor. "Expect a few new twists and turns and a lot of mud" said Foster. "Although this may seem like a daunting task, no experience is necessary and each year at least six real beginner teams enter."
Teams of three navigate the wilderness by foot, bike, and canoe, with only a map and compass to guide them. "This event is mostly about teamwork, perseverance, leadership, and enjoying the outdoors - although a basic level of physical fitness is required." said Nadine Robinson, the event's coordinator. "It is an unforgettable experience for everyone involved each year, and spectators are welcome."
Last year more than 150 students from over 50 schools in Ontario participated.
Even though only 17 teams raced from North of Huntsville, representing 32% of the teams, they managed to claim 56% of the top rankings. North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, and Wawa teams won five of the top nine spots at the 2009 event. Of those, Banana Splits from Widdifield Secondary School of North Bay were the event champions with a time of 2 hours and 59 minutes. Men With Baggage - Lock City Dairies from Korah Collegiate claimed top spot in the co-ed division with a time of 3:20 and Captain Jack's-Bush Babies from Michipicoten High School in Wawa finished second in the female division with a time of 4:20.
Safety is always paramount for the organizers so Frontier Adventure Sports & Training, with 13 years of safety experience in the business, will again oversee this year's event.
The High School Adventure Challenge is presented by Algoma University of Sault Ste. Marie and CTV. Other key sponsors include TV's Survivorman - Les Stroud, Deerhurst Resort, Paddlefoot, Research in Motion, the Sault Star, Axis Gear, Pictographics, 99.5 YES FM and the Canadian Racing Adventure Association.
