Exporting Citations from Specific Databases
Most of the Wishart Library databases are provided by a vendor (a company that facilitates access to the databases) The database list below will direct you to the correct vendor for instructions on how to export citations to your RefWorks account. Vendor instructions are listed below the database list. You will need to sign up for an individual account the first time you use RefWorks.
ABI/INFORM Global (Proquest)

ABC-CLIO
- Perform search and view results.
- Tag records for export to RefWorks.
- Select Export Options tab at top of results screen.
- Select 'Full Entry' for Entry Type.
- Select RefWorks as Output Type and click Export Records.
- If you are not already logged into RefWorks, you will be prompted to log-in to RefWorks.
- The selected citations will be imported directly to your RefWorks account.
BioOne
- Conduct a search.
- When viewing an abstract or full text article, select the "Create Reference" option at the top.
- Select the "RefWorks" format.
- Log into RefWorks.
- Your citations will be directly imported into your RefWorks account.
Chadwick-Healey
NOTE: Chadwyck-Healey is currently encountering problems with its export to RefWorks functionality. In all cases, data is being dropped or exported to RefWorks incorrectly. For MLA International Bibliography, the export feature fails completely. We are working to get these issues resolved.
- Perform your search and view results.
- Mark records you wish to export to RefWorks.
- Select MARKED LIST (link is near top of screen).
- Select Download Citations. Select Export Directly to RefWorks.
- References are automatically saved to RefWorks.
- If you are not already logged into RefWorks you will be prompted to enter your username and password.
EBSCOhost
- Perform your search and view results.
- Mark records to Folder by selecting ADD.
- Click on the Folder icon to view contents of the Folder.
- Click on SAVE to DISK.
- Select the Bibliographic Manager tab.
- Select "Direct Export to RefWorks" and click SAVE.
Export Not Supported
- Perform your search and view results.
- In RefWorks, click NEW REFERENCE to create an empty new reference.
- Select the type of reference (e.g. web site). Changing the type of reference automatically changes the RefWorks fields to the new type of reference.
- Type or copy and paster the data from the reference into RefWorks.
- Click SAVE.
GALE
- Perform search and view results
- Mark records you wish to export to RefWorks.
- Click Marked Items. Click How to Cite Marked Items.
- In the Export to Third Party Software section, select RefWorks.
- Click on Export.
- References are automatically saved to RefWorks.
- If you are not already logged in to RefWorks you will be prompted to enter your username and password.
H. W. Wilson
- Perform search and view results.
- Mark records you wish to export to Refworks.
- Click on Get Marked. Click on Exporting/Citing.
- Click on Export to RefWorks/Endnote Software.
- Select RefWorks in Download Records into.
- Click on Export
JSTOR
- Click on Save Citation, an option which appears alongside each article available via JSTOR.
- Note that this action is necessary for each article you wish to import to JSTOR.
- Click on View Saved Citations to view most recently saved citations plus any citations saved previously in the same session.
- Opt to export citations as a text file in citation manager format (i.e. default selections).
- A new window displaying the text file will open.
- Save the file to the desired location.
- To import the citations to RefWorks select Import from the References menu within RefWorks.
- Select JSTOR as import filter and database.
- Select the Browse Files option to identify the text file containing the saved references you wish to import.
- Click the Import icon at the bottom of the screen.
Project MUSE
- Perform search and view results.
- Mark records for export to RefWorks.
- Click on Save Marked Results.
- Click on E-mail/Export Saved Results.
- Select export marked results to RefWorks.
- References are automatically saved to RefWorks.
- If you are not already logged in to RefWorks you will be prompted to enter your username and password.
Proquest
- Perform search and view results.
- Mark records for export to RefWorks.
- View the articles you have marked by selecting the MY RESEARCH tab.
- Click Export citations into Endnote, Procite, RefWorks, or Reference Manager.
- Click Export Directly to RefWorks. References are automatically exported directly to RefWorks.
- If you are not already logged into RefWorks you will be prompted for your username and password.
Scholars Portal (New Version)
- Peform your search and view results.
- Mark records for export to RefWorks.
- Click on the link to RefWorks which displays at the top of the results display list.
- The marked references are selected, though an option to select all references is also provided.
- Click on the Save to RefWorks button and the references are automatically saved to the RefWorks database.
- If you are not already logged into RefWorks, you will be prompted to enter your username and password.
Scholar's Portal (Original Version)
- Choose browse or search.
- Mark one or more article for export to RefWorks.
- Click on save selected.
- Click on My Articles to see the articles just saved in addition to previously saved articles.
- Select articles for export and click on Add to RefWorks.
- References are automatically exported directly to RefWorks.
- If you are not already logged in to RefWorks you will be prompted for your username and password.
Web of Science (aka ISI Web of Science)
- Perform search and view results.
- Mark articles you wish to import to RefWorks.
- The default selection is selected articles.
- Opt to view marked articles (option on right-hand side of screen).
- A Marked List icon will then appear at the top of the results list.
- Click on it.
- Select fields you wish to include within imported data.
- Click on the option to Save to File (leaving field tagged option).
- Save as a text file.
- Do not click on the option to Export to Reference Software as RefWorks is not supported here.
- To import the references to RefWorks select Import from the References menu within RefWorks.
- Select ISI (Institute of Scientific Information) as the import filter. Select Web of Science as the database.
- Choose the Browse Files option to identify the text file containing the saved references you wish to import.
- Click the Import icon at the bottom of the screen.
