Sault Ste. Marie: The Heart of the Great LakesThe Algoma campus is located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario—also known as “The Soo.” This urban centre of over 75,000 people on the shores of the St. Mary's River has lots of opportunities for sightseeing, shopping and entertainment. And international travel is as simple as crossing the bridge to Michigan.
Sault Ste. Marie has a vibrant cultural life, with festivals and carnivals throughout the year bringing musicians and artists to town. The cost of living is very manageable, and part-time jobs are available both on- and off-campus.
The Great Outdoors
If you like fresh air, blue waters and wide-open skies, then you’ll love Sault Ste. Marie — one of the sunniest places in Canada. And make sure you pack your skis, skates, snowshoes, snowboard, bike, and hiking and climbing gear because the Algoma U campus is within 45 minutes of some of the most spectacular outdoor activities in the province.
You’ll find perfect locations for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, mountain biking and hiking. And the beautiful beaches of Lake Superior are ideal if you want to canoe, kayak, fish, build sandcastles or just relax.
And if you feel like chilling out and taking in some beautiful scenery, then our gorgeous campus overlooking the St. Mary’s River is the place to be. Just pick a spot and let your eyes wander over the view while your mind wanders wherever it wants. Remember, Newton discovered gravity under a tree, not in a library.
