S.T.A.R.Strategies, Technology and Resources
Make the transition from high school to university successful!
What is STAR?
STAR is a FREE 3-day program for university bound students. Students can face many challenges as they make the move from high school to university. STAR is designed to help ease the transition and is especially beneficial for students with learning disabilities.
Participating in STAR will help students:
understand the differences between high school and university
learn about different learning strategies
become familiar with assistive technology
learn concrete tools and resources to help ease the transition to university
understand what professors expect by sitting in on mock lectures conducted by university profs
Who is STAR for?
Students are invited to stay in residence, at no charge to them, to participate in the total university experience. All meals and social events are also included in the program.
STAR is for the students who meet the following criteria:
Recent Algoma District high school graduate
Will be attending an Ontario university in September 2011
What former STAR participants have said . . .
“The STAR program not only helped me get started on the right foot academically, but socially as well, especially because I was new to the Sault. Four years later, I am still friends with people I met in the STAR program. Being in STAR was definitely the smartest move I ever made.” - Melissa Thibeault, STAR 2006
“Going into university from high school is a big change of atmosphere and the STAR program taught me everything I needed to know about the transition into university. My first day of university was less stressful because I knew where I was going, what to expect, and had tools under my belt in order to keep my grades up.” - Calyssa Rimkey, STAR 2009
When is STAR?
STAR 2012 will take place in early July. Check back for details.
