For students who prefer or need to live off-campus, Algoma U maintains a current listing of off-campus-housing:
Our off-campus accommodations listing is divided into four sections:
Rooms in Houses. Share a majority of the house such as the kitchen, living room, bathroom, kitchen, etc.
Room and Board. Similar to having a room in a house except some meals are provided.
Apartments
Homes for Rent. Usually multiple tenants share the homes. The landlord does not live in the home.
Contact housing@algomau.ca if you have questions or require additional information.
Determine how much you can afford each month
Decide if you will be living along or with roommates (it is less expensive to share)
Ask about rules/lifestyle, i.e.: are there quiet hours?
Inspect the accommodations
Consider the location - how close it is to school, food stores, and bus services?
An oral tenancy agreement can be legally binding including any agreement about how long you will rent the place. Take a few minutes to sit down and list all the details of the rental agreement, as discussed by you and the landlord. It is recommended that a witness be present when making the agreement. Include the date, time and place where the agreement was made. Have the agreement in writing. For information on your rights as a tenant, please refer to the Tenant Protection Act, 1997 (information available through the Residence Co-ordinator).
Insurance: Tenant's Liability Insurance covers theft and fire, and can be a great comfort in case of an emergency. Insurance rates vary depending on your coverage requirements.
Telephone: You may wish to arrange for a land line telephone. For more information contact Bell Canada or Shaw Cable.
Utilities: Utilities (heat, electricity, etc.) may be included in your rent or you may have to pay directly. Ask your landlord.
Please note that the Off Campus Housing Service provides only a list of available accommodation. In permitting available accommodation to be listed, the university is providing a gratuitous service and cannot and does not make representations or warranties concerning the quality or suitability of accommodations listed. The university cannot and does not accept responsibility or any liability for housing arrangements arrived at through the off-campus-housing list. We recommend that you obtain independent legal advice before signing a lease with a landlord or student.
