Employment Opportunities for International Students

International Students Working on Campus

Through the International Work Study Program (IWSP) Students who hold a valid Study Permit and are enrolled in full-time studies are permitted to work on campus without a work permit.

Through our IWSP program you may apply to work at various departments within the university including, Student Services, the Athletic Centre, the Library and the Registrar’s Office.  Positions offer employment for 6-8 hours a week, as to not interfere with your studies.

You may also apply to work on campus in the Cafeteria, the Athletic Centre, Bookstore and the Campus Bar.  You may negotiate your hours of employment with your employer.

International Students Working Off-Campus

If you are an International student studying in Canada you must meet the following criteria to be eligible for a work permit under the Off –Campus Work Permit (OCWP).  Requirements are subject to change. Visit www.cic.gc.ca for up-to-date information:


Students who hold a valid OCWP are permitted to work off-campus for a maximum of 20 hours a week during study periods and 40 hours a week during non-study periods.  For further information contact Mark Allard at: mark.allard@algomau.ca.

International Co-op Opportunities

Students may choose to participate in our Co-operative Education Program (more commonly known as Co-op).  The Co-op Program is a certificate program that allows students to work in paid full-time positions that are relevant to their field of study.  Co-op requirements are as follows:

Working After Graduation

Students who have attended and graduated from academic programs with a 2-year duration or longer are eligible for a post-graduate work permit for up to three years.  For more detailed information on this work permit please contact Mark Allard, International Student Advisor at: mark.allard@algomau.ca .
