The Algoma U Foundation is committed to providing scholarships and bursaries to Algoma University students now, and into the future. The Algoma U Foundation currently manages a number of endowed funds that provide scholarships and bursaries to Algoma University students. These funds are held by the Foundation in perpetuity, and the interest earned by these funds is used to provide financial awards to students.
New endowed funds are created with donations of $20,000 or more, sometimes pledged over a period of three to five years.
The Alexander M. Ross Award was created in 2003 through a generous donation from the late Alexander M. Ross. Mr. Ross, M.C., M.A. (Queen's University), Professor Emeritus (University of Guelph) served in the Royal Canadian Artillery during World War II. An author, Mr. Ross has written and co-written 6 books. The Alexander M. Ross Award is an annual award provided to a student in either their third or fourth year of studies in humanities.
The Algoma U Student Humanitarian Award was established in memory of Dr. Gerald Edson Mohamed. Created by his family and friends as a permanent memorial to this generous-hearted man, the Algoma U Student Humanitarian Award will be used to provide an award to a graduating student who has demonstrated the highest level of civic engagement, community leadership and participation during their university years.
Dr. Mohamed had an impact on the lives of many people. Throughout his career he was always ready to help anyone who needed his services and he strongly advocated that young people should pursue an education. Dr. Mohamed believed in being involved and providing leadership to his community and to his profession.
The Askin Family Bursary was established by Muriel Askin a committed community activist and dedicated volunteer. Mrs. Askin is passionate about Sault Ste Marie and desires to make this community not only a place for her children to grow up in but a place where they can work and raise their families too. The Askin Family Bursary is provided annually to a student in good academic standing with demonstrated unmet financial need.
Brookfield Power is an active contributor to communities across Canada. The Brookfield Power First Nations Environmental Science Student Award is an endowed bursary that supports Anishinaabe students studying in the field of Chemistry or Biology at Algoma University.
The Carl J. Sanders Scholarship was established from a bequest more than 25 years ago. Mr. Sanders was a Toronto-based businessman with varied interests, who over the years, donated generously to many educational institutions and charitable organizations. A Minnesota native, Mr. Sanders lived in Sault Ste Marie in 1914. The generous renewable entrance scholarship promotes academic excellence.
The Dr. Edwin Giesbrecht Mathematics Award was created to honour the memory of the late Dr. Edwin Giesbrecht. Dr. Giesbrecht was devoted to the teaching of mathematics. He spent 32 years teaching at Algoma University from 1970 to 2002 and lead the annual William M. Hogg Mathematics Contest. His crowning achievement was the completion of his textbook in 1999, "Discovering Discrete Mathematics". The award provides an annual scholarship to a full time student specializing in mathematics.
With the retirement of the Academic Dean, Dr. Jong You, Algoma University said a warm goodbye to a professor who has long been a stellar contributor to university life, academic excellence and community growth. While at Algoma University Dr. You was involved in several projects including: "Net Economic Benefits of Correctional Treatment" and "External (Socio-Economic) Benefits and Costs of Hydroelectricity Generation in Northern Ontario." In recognition of this, the CESD Department established the Dr. Jong You Student Award which will provide an annual bursary to a full-time student pursuing their CESD degree.
The Dr. Ken McLarty Research Award was created to assist students undertaking valuable research in the human services field of study. Dr. McLarty's involvement with education crosses decades, boundaries and classrooms. Dr. McLarty was a long-standing member of the Geography Department at Algoma University when he retired after 23 years of dedicated service. Before joining the Geography Department, Dr. McLarty taught at both primary and secondary levels for the Sault Ste Marie Board of Education, and also served as Principal and Vice-Principal in the Elementary panel for a number of years.
The Dr. Robert V. d'Amato Student Award was established by Theatre Algoma, an former on-campus theatre group that was established in 1973 and devoted to performing alternative forms of theatre in an intimate setting. This award provides financial assistance to students studying English, Fine Arts or Music at Algoma University.
The Edward and Frank McGrath Award of Excellence was created through a generous bequest. Originally from New Brunswick, the brothers moved to Sault Ste. Marie in the early 1990's. Edward expressed a considerable interest in Algoma U and its library. As a former educator, Edward requested that a scholarship fund be set up in the names of his brother and himself. Frank was a former Economics Professor at New Brunswick University. Both brothers expressed the same wish to benefit future generation's pursuing higher education in this community.
The Essar Group strives to enrich and support the communities in and around its operations. Community involvement and support at ESSAR Steel Algoma Inc. focuses on four pillars: education, health, sports and social services. The ESSAR Student Assistance Award provides bursaries for students in business, computer science or chemistry. First consideration for the award is given to a child, grandchild or legal ward of a current employee or retiree of ESSAR Steel Algoma Inc.
The Evan D. Young Memorial Bursary was established by Florence Clarke in 1994 to honour the memory of her brother. This award provides an annual bursary to a mature student who has taken at least two science courses at Algoma University.
Gerald E. Nori was a stalwart supporter of Algoma University College and the Algoma University College Foundation for more than four decades. As Chair of the Algoma U Board of Governors, he led the university through a critical restructuring period, focusing on the future of Algoma U as an important regional university and an important social and economic driver for Sault Ste. Marie and area. Much of his work laid the foundation for what is now coming to fruition. Gerry was an early supporter of the Algoma University College Foundation and tirelessly promoted the need for financial support from the community.
Sadly, Gerry passed away in January 2007. His memory and legacy live on through the Gerald E. Nori, Q.C. Student Assistance Fund which was created in his honour in 2005.
The Gloria Jean Grossett Memorial Award was established in memory of Gloria Jean Grossett by the late Bob FitzSimmons, a friend and business partner. A graduate of Algoma U, Gloria believed strongly in education and overcame adversity and hardship to attend Algoma U, while raising four children on her own The Gloria Jean Grossett Memorial Award will be provided to a full-time female student in good standing, who has a financial need.
The Great-West Life Student Assistance Fund was created by Great-West Life, a leading insurer in Canada. Great-West Life is a strong supporter of communities across the country through The Key to Giving program. By combining financial strength and their employees' volunteer spirit with a firm commitment to the communities where they live and work, Great-West Life is helping to build a strong Algoma University. This award goes to a student with a financial need, who is entering their third or fourth year of business studies.

The Johanna Bischopping Bursary was created through a bequest. Johanna graduated from Algoma U in 1978 with a BA (Sociology). She was a very caring person with a great sense of humour and a burning commitment to social justice which led her to become a field officer for the Ontario Ombudsman serving Sault Ste. Marie, Algoma and Manitoulin districts. The Johanna Bischopping Bursary is awarded to a mature student enrolled in a full-time program with good academic standing and who have a demonstrated financial need.
A generous gift from the estate of John Deakin Buckley Walton provides an annual award to a full time student entering second or third year of a Fine Arts program with the highest average academic standing in their concentration.
The Judge John Hay McDonald & Mrs. Vera McDonald Memorial Scholarship was created from a bequest by the late Provincial Court Judge, J.H. McDonald. Judge McDonald graduated from Queen's University with his B.A. in 1910 and from the University of Toronto in 1913. He was the mayor of North Bay (1923-1925) and served on several boards in schools and hospitals in every community he lived in.
The John R. Rhodes Scholarship was established in 1979 through generous donations from friends and family of the late John Rhodes, M.P.P. Mr. Rhodes was a former Mayor of Sault Ste Marie and a member of the provincial cabinet where he served in various capacities from 1971 to 1978 including; Minister of Transportation and Communications, Minister of Housing and Minister of Industry and Tourism. This prestigious scholarship, valued at $3,000 is offered annually to a student entering their first year of university studies from secondary school who has demonstrated academic achievement and community leadership involved in political, social or academic activities.
The Judge M.G. Gould Award was established by the Algoma District Law Association in honour of the late Algoma District Court Judge M.G. Gould. Judge Gould graduated from the University of Toronto with a B.A. in Classics. He was awarded the Edward Blake Scholarship and the McCaul medal for highest standing in Classics. In 1968 Judge Gould was appointed Queen's Counsel. He was a world traveler and naturalist who loved the outdoors. The award provides an annual bursary to Canada's First Nation or Inuit people.
The Kenneth & Colleen Moodie Scholarship was established in 2006 to honour their 60th wedding anniversary and to celebrate the defining role post-secondary education had played in their lives.
Mrs. Moodie was the first woman in her family to earn a university degree, several years after graduating from Teachers' College. Mrs. Moodie said she decided to pursue a university degree, after teaching for several years, because she knew it would make her career more satisfying and more lucrative. She worked full-time while attending classes, and graduated from Algoma U in 1978 with a degree in English.
Mr. & Mrs. Moodie believed that an education is an important component of a successful and happy life, and made sure their family members understood the opportunities a post-secondary education would provide for them.
The Kenneth & Colleen Moodie Scholarship will provide one award to a mature or college-transfer female student with high academic standing in her discipline.
The Living Learning Student Assistance Fund was created by the Living Learning Campaign that raised over one million dollars for the Algoma U Foundation's endowment fund with matching funds from the Ontario Trust Fund for Student Support.
The Ontario Métis Association Fund was created in the late 1990's by Tony Belcourt, President of The Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO), to give Métis people an opportunity to attend university. The MNO encourages academic skills development to enable citizens of the Métis Nation to attain their educational aspirations.
The Paul & Bricken Dalseg, Pioneers of Lake-of-the-Woods Student Award was established by Paul Dalseg in honour of his parents Paul & Bricken Dalseg. This award will provide assistance to Anishinaabe students living in the Treaty 3 Area.
The Peggy & Willmont MacDonnell Scholarship was created with a bequest. Peggy & Willmont MacDonnell spent their summers in Sault Ste Marie. After retiring in 1971, they moved to Sault Ste Marie and purchased the Alleway & Bedford store which they operated from 1972-1981. The couple felt strongly about the need for young people to get a good education and wanted to help them achieve their goals by establishing the Peggy & Willmont MacDonnell Scholarship.
Mr. Gino Sartor, a local property developer established the Sar-Gin Developments (Sault) Ltd. Student Award in 2005, to provide a bursary award to a graduating student who has been accepted at a recognized Canadian medical school. Mr. Sartor was recognized in 1998 by the Sault Ste Marie Chamber of Commerce as "Entrepreneur of the Year" honouring his achievements as a business person and his contributions to the growth and improvement of our community.
The Sault Recreation Hockey Association Fun through Recreation Award was created with a generous donation to the Algoma U Foundation. The Sault Recreation Hockey Association provided children in Sault Ste. Marie with the opportunity to play hockey and later ringette. In the 25 years that the SHRA existed, many thousands of children participated in recreational hockey. This award will be presented to upper-year students showing financial need who have participated in minor hockey (house league level).
Created by a generous gift, the Scotiabank International Merit Scholarship was established to generate an annual scholarship that will be awarded to an Algoma University student with high academic standing who has been accepted into the international exchange program. Thanks to the generosity of Scotiabank, Algoma University students will have the opportunity to participate in the international exchange program.
The Shingwauk Anishinaabe Student Assistance Fund was established in 2006 with a generous donation from the Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students Association (SASA). SASA actively represents Anishinaabe students at Algoma University. Among many objectives, SASA provides cultural, social & academic support for all Anishinaabe students. The Shingwauk Anishinaabe Students Assistance Fund provides for three scholarships and one bursary.
Established in 2007, the Hogg Family Endowment for the Carolyn Harrington Award will be provided to an Indigenous student in the business program, studying full-time, who has the highest overall standing in the second year of his or her studies.
Carolyn Harrington, for whom the award is named, became an honorary member of Algoma U (Senate Award) in 2007. One of the founding members of the Community Economic and Social Development (CESD) advisory committee, Carolyn has also worked at Algoma U as a part-time instructor in the CESD, geography, and sociology departments. Her work as the faculty student advisor in the CESD program has helped to ensure that students have the necessary practical skills for employment following graduation.
Carolyn has also worked for more than 20 years in community development within the urban Anishinaabe community at the Indian Friendship Centre. In her capacity there, she helped to establish a number of organizations such as Neech-ke-wehn Homes, a non-profit housing program which provides supportive housing to close to 200 families and about 50 senior citizens.
With her tireless work on behalf of the Anishinaabe community, the Hogg Family Endowment for the Carolyn Harrington Award is a fitting tribute to this remarkable woman.
The Peter McGregor Memorial Award was established by friends and family in memory of the late Peter McGregor. Peter devoted his time to helping others and contributed to Sault Ste Marie serving as the separate school Board Trustee, President of the local NDP party, a founding member of the Algoma Branch of the Ontario Association of Professional Social Workers and community volunteer. The annual award provides assistance to a student enrolled in at least 2 social welfare courses and demonstrates a record of service to the community.
The Very Reverend Meletios Christoforou Scholarship is a fund established in July 1987 through the efforts of Professor George Gekas and the generous donations of many, to honour the Late Greek Orthodox missionary/travelling priest who served over 60 years in Africa and North America. The fund provides an annual scholarship to students in the business program.
The William M. Hogg Scholarship is an endowed fund established to honour the late President and Chairman of Great Lakes Power Corp and long-time member of the Algoma University's Board of Governors. The scholarship provides an award to students in Science related disciplines.
The Tulloch Engineering Student Award was created by the generous donation from Michael F. Tulloch. This award will provide financial aid to a second, third or fourth year student who is in good academic standing and has demonstrated financial need, and who is majoring in the field of math or science.
This award was established through a generous donation by John Kallio as part of the Living Learning Campaign. A member of USW Local 2251, Mr. Kallio established this award to provide financial aid to a child or grandchild of a member of the USW Local 2251.
Created in 1990 in memory of the late Mr. Walter Yurechuk by family and friends, this annual scholarship awards students from Sault Ste Marie in the accounting program, the BBA program or a student majoring in Mathematics. During his career, Mr. Yurechuk was a partner with the firm Peat, Marwick Thorne Chartered Accountants.
