Sociology Program

Sociology at Algoma includes both an honours (four year) Bachelor of Arts degree and a general (three year) Bachelor of Arts degree (B.A.). The program provides critical skills for understanding and interpreting the social world and offers courses which address a wide variety of areas from contemporary media depictions of gender and the body to major debates in the environmental movement, to health policy analysis, to critical assessments of law and social justice, and Canadian policy in relation to multiculturalism and Aboriginal rights.

The program provides three areas of concentration: the study of social inequality and social movements; race and diversity; and gender and sexuality. The faculty have expertise in areas which include critiques of health and technology; contemporary social movements; the study of culture and media; feminist theory; comparative sociology; the sociology of aging; the sociology of the family; and critical analysis of race and sexuality.

Sociologists use a wide range of research methods to gather information about people, groups and social institutions. Research may include anonymous surveys, interviews with members of a particular population, observational studies, polls or focus groups. Sociologists may also study historical documents such as birth and death records, or personal documents such as letters.

Courses in research methods will acquaint students with analysis methods, while courses concerning theory and sociological concepts will prepare students to utilize the information gathered to explain social phenomena clearly.

Electives in Anthropology are available to complement the Sociology program. Anthropologists focus on cultures of traditional and modern folk societies. Courses offered will familiarize students with cultural anthropology through the use of empirical evidence and analysis.
