This year’s course options are:
CESD 1006: Introduction to Community Economic and Social Development I
This course provides an introduction to the basic concepts and theories of Community Economic and Social Development, including using an interdisciplinary, holistic approach to community development. The course situates CESD within the global, regional and local context and provides students with an introductory understanding of terminology necessary for CESD practice. (3 cr)
CESD 3906: Special Topics I: Food Security, Sovereignty, and Globalization
In a world where over 800 million people in the world suffer from hunger and where the phrase “super-size me” is becoming commonplace, communities are asking questions about where their food comes from. Chef celebrities and authors who detest GMOs and praise the 100 Mile Diet are just a few of the voices in this movement to understand sustainable food systems, food security and sovereignty. This course will look at the growth in food secure alternatives (fair trade, organic agriculture and local food) as responses from conventional food systems that have become increasingly unsustainable in the 21st Century. This course will also explore how communities can build networks of support for resilient food systems (from farm to fork) that work at the local, regional and international level. (3cr)
Fee: $771.71 per 3 credit course for Canadian students, plus an application fee of $50.00 for new Algoma University students. On-campus accommodation available.
