Athletics and Recreation

Varsity Sports

Algoma Thunderbirds Athletics Algoma University participates in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) with varsity men's and women's basketball teams. Both the men's and women's teams compete in the OCAA's Western Division. The program has achieved great success over the past few seasons with the women's team capturing a silver medal at the 2007 OCAA Provincial Championships and the men achieving the same level of excellence in 2008!!

The regular season for both basketball teams runs from October to February, and all home games are played at the George Leach Centre. Both teams create excitement for both the student-athletes and for the entire Algoma U community. We look forward to great fan support from students, staff and faculty throughout the year.

Men’s and women’s curling rinks also participate in the OCAA, and Algoma University is proud of our OCAA Men's 2004 Curling Champions. In 2007 & 2008, the Algoma U Women's rink secured a silver medal at the OCAA Provincial Championships.

2009 was a great year for the Mixed Curling team, who brought home the Gold. In 2010 Mixed Curling won the Silver medal, in a game hosted here in Sault Ste. Marie.
