Algoma University invites applications for the appointment of a Biology Lab Coordinator [Temporary] for a four month term, working the equivalent of three days per week commencing August 16, 2010 and ending December 15, 2010.
Reporting to the Chair of Biology, under the direction of the Dean, the Biology Lab Coordinator is responsible for the following tasks: laboratory preparation, budget maintenance and ordering, and chemical and MSDS inventory.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Laboratory preparation: including preparation of solutions (i.e., set-up), gathering demonstration materials, organising supplies, obtaining plant and animal material, and post-lab clean-up. Liaising with, and supporting all BIOL and CHMI faculty to ensure that all lab sections are well-supplied and prepared prior to course delivery.
Teaching assistant supervision: Responsible for supervising, supporting and training teaching assistants, if available. Assisting in development and implementation of new laboratory exercises, performing trial runs on new and old exercises as needed to ensure success in classes.
Budget maintenance and ordering: Providing, maintaining and purchasing stocks, materials, and lab organisms. This includes determination of faculty needs, comparative pricing, and ordering. Maintain documentation (e.g., spreadsheets) of needs, ordering and regular reporting.
Chemical inventory: including ongoing maintenance of a complete inventory of all chemicals in the facility; maintaining and updating (as necessary) all MSDS records; marking all chemicals with appropriate MSDS labels.
Maintaining and supervising use of lab equipment.
Reporting any facility maintenance to the head of the department and advising physical plant of any repairs, additions or modifications needed within the laboratories.
Other Duties: including any other, non-specified functions relating to the effectiveness of the Biology and Chemistry Departments.
Minimum Qualifications:
M.Sc. in a natural science discipline
Experience in plant and animal care
Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills
Excellent writing skills
Excellent creative problem-solving skills
Demonstrated initiative
Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines
WHIMS training (can be taken upon hire)

Algoma University invites applications for a tenure-track Research Chair in Bio-products to join the Department of Biology, at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful applicant will have expertise in Natural Products Chemistry and/or Chemical Ecology. Specific areas of expertise being sought include, but are not limited to, biochemistry, phytochemistry, chemical ecology, applied pharmacology. Preference will be given to individuals who have interest in invasive species biology, an area of focus for the Department of Biology at Algoma University. Applicants must have a Ph.D. and will benefit from a strong research record including postdoctoral training as well as teaching experience.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded research program in bio-products and/or chemical ecology, and to develop a regional network of academics dedicated to bio-products-related Research and Development, potentially involving innovation in the value-added forestry and agriculture industries. The candidate will be expected to initiate research projects and prepare funding applications based on academic, public and private sector collaborations including provincial, federal and international partners.
