Officially opening its doors in July, 2011, the new $21.4 million LEED-certified Biosciences and Technology Convergence Centre (BTCC), located on the campus of Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, brings together teaching, research and commercial activities in a dynamic atmosphere that fosters innovation and growth.
Along with teaching and faculty research labs, established enterprises like the internationally recognized Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, will anchor the facility. Another tenant of the BTCC is the newly-launched Algoma Games for Health, a design studio that brings computer games technology to the delivery of health care and rehabilitation services. Algoma Games for Health provides research and development expertise to both for-profit and non-profit organizations.
Algoma University has received federal and provincial funding totaling $18.3 million for the BTCC. Of this, $10,302,000 was received from the Province of Ontario’s Knowledge Infrastructure Program and 2009 Budget and another $6 million was contributed by the Federal Government as part of the Knowledge Infrastructure Program.
